Pop culture meaning
Schizoid is a meaningless title adopted by hypersocial and hyperemotional teenagers to distance themselves from popular culture as well as to reduce responsibility and increase social status. In rare cases the title is adopted because of a misunderstanding of what "schizo" means, where it is falsely believed to mean "sicko," so "schizoid" becomes "sicko person" or more fundamentally "evil person".
Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, and apathy. Affected individuals are unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously demonstrate a rich, elaborate and exclusively internal fantasy world.
Like Schizotypal personality disorder, Schizoid personality disorder is close symptomatically and genetically to schizophrenia and some schizoid individuals turn schizophrenic. It is believed that an even smaller minority of people have SPD compared to schizophrenia, where schizophrenia constitutes as little as 1% of most populations.
