Term from Japan (【引きこもり】) which indicates a socially withdrawn recluse who rarely leaves his house i.e. a shut-in. Hikki is for short. According to the Japanese government, one has to have been a shut-in for at least six months consecutively. A hikki and a NEET are not mutually inclusive; while the definition of a NEET excludes any kind of education or employment, a hikki might engage in any activity not prevented by his reclusive lifestyle.
